Celtic are reliant on the Hoops striker for goals but Beattie thinks the Bhoys cannot allow themselves to be short of cover in case the Parkhead prodigy is sidelined.

Celtic should look to being one or two new strikers to Parkhead in January in order to cover themselves in case Odsonne Edouard becomes unavailable, according to the Hoops ex-player Craig Beattie.

Edouard has been absolutely crucial for the Bhoys since his arrival at Celtic Park in the summer of 2018, notching up 22 goals and eight assists last season, while this term he has a staggering 12 goals and 12 assists in just 24 games (Transfermarkt).

For all of the 21-year-old’s heroics, Beattie is concerned with Celtic’s reliance on him, and his worry is, should he pick up an injury or suspension, the Hoops would find themselves very light up front.

In conversation with Sky Sports News, as quoted by the Daily Record, the 35-year-old – who was also at Celtic’s rivals as a youngster – spoke about both Edouard and his strike rival across Glasgow, Alfredo Morelos.

“At the minute, Celtic are very light up front with the exception of Edouard,” he said. “So should he get injured or something happens to him, I think Edouard is more valuable (than Morelos) at this point.

“Celtic need to strengthen in January. Both need to strengthen, if I’m being honest. Rangers need to strengthen in terms of numbers because if something was to happen to Morelos then you’re relying on Defoe to play all the matches but Celtic really need to strengthen if something was to happen to Edouard. One or possibly two strikers.”
