Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths expects the permanent signing of Odsonne Edouard to benefit the team in their pursuit of a 50th Scottish league title in 2019.

The club confirmed Edouard’s transfer last week from Paris Saint-Germain, following an impressive loan spell in 2017/18 in which he scored 11 goals in 29 appearances.

The deal saw him become Celtic’s record signing, eclipsing the £6 million paid for Chris Sutton and John Hartson, and he will now be fighting it out with Griffiths and Moussa Dembele for a starting spot. In the eyes of Griffiths, having three strikers vying to be the top dog will only be a good thing for their 2018/19 title hopes.

“You always want to welcome new additions to the squad We saw his qualities last season and we’ve signed him on a permanent deal. It’s all about that one striker position that the gaffer normally plays. You want to be selfish and you want to be playing. We have three good strikers now vying for that one place,” he told the club’s official website.

“It can be frustrating when you don’t play but when you do play you need to take your chance, impress the manager and you’ll be in the team. It’s hard enough when it’s two, never mind three, so when your chance comes you need to take it with both hands.”

Griffiths, who made 35 apperances across all competitions last term but only 11 league starts, will be keen to make the most of his opportunities in 2018/19, with Brendan Rodgers preferring to set up with only one striker.

It will be interesting to see which of the trio becomes more favoured after they all scored nine goals each in the Scottish Premiership in 2017/18.
