Everton fans might have had a few doubts about paying such a huge fee for Celtic star Moussa Dembele.
If there was any doubt about Moussa Dembele fitting that tired old cliché of being a ‘one season wonder’, Celtic’s goalscoring phenomenon has dispelled this in style this season.
The striker cost the Scottish Champions a compensation fee of just £500,000 in the summer of 2016 when his contract at Fulham expired, per Sky Sports. And it’s fair to say he has repaid that minor investment with interest, netting 32 times in a stunning debut season to help Celtic to a first domestic treble since 2001.
An unbeaten one at that.
The problem facing Celtic, however, is that the next step seems close. Brendan Rodgers himself even admitted that Dembele is likely to leave at the end of his second season in Scotland.
And Everton are sure to be interested again after The Sun linked them with a £30 million move for Dembele in the summer. The report said that Everton saw the France Under-21 star as a possible replacement for Romelu Lukaku and it goes without saying that the Belgian powerhouse is still hugely missed in The Toffees’ attack.
The 21-year-old has recovered from an injury-hit start to the season to score six goals in 13 games – and the sense is that the best is yet to come from a player whose clinical double in the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hibernian has Celtic on the verge of another trophy.
If Dembele does indeed see that his time at Celtic has come to an end in 2018, then Everton should not stand by and let the rest of Europe’s biggest clubs fight it out for his signature.
