Celtic star Leigh Griffiths sets goalscoring target for next season

The 25-year-old was in sensational form for the Scottish Premiership side this past campaign.

Despite a stunning campaign that saw him inspire Celtic to their fifth league title in a row, Leigh Griffiths is determined to not get too carried away when setting a target for next season, The Scottish Sun reports.

The striker bagged 40 goals in all competitions for the Hoops, including 31 in the league. His tally is all the more impressive given that he went into the season with a fight on his hands trying to cement himself as the side’s first-choice up front.

But despite his excellent form and the fact that he will surely go into the new campaign as the undisputed talisman of the side, he has suggested that he would be foolish to set such a high benchmark for next season.

“It will be difficult to replicate last season, but I’ll be trying my hardest,” he told The Scottish Sun.

“Is 50 realistic? No, not really. How many times did Henrik Larsson score over 40 in one season? And he is one of the greatest-ever players to play for Celtic.

“I am thankful that I managed to hit 40 goals last season, but my realistic target for next year will be 20. If I get a consistent run in the team, then start scoring goals, I will be happy. Anything above 20 will be a bonus.”

While some Celtic supporters may be slightly concerned about the 25-year-old’s more modest target, it is arguably the ideal benchmark for the Scotland international.

It shows that he knows that it will be tough next year, regardless of his form this past season, which may help ensure that Griffiths remains focused on each fixture rather than allowing any complacency into his game.

But it is also fair to say that his target only looks slightly modest because of what he has achieved this past term. There is no doubt that if he manages to hit the mark, and the rest of the team manage to support him with plenty of goals of their own, it is still difficult to envisage any team stopping the Bhoys bagging their sixth successive league title.
