McGregor starred for Rangers despite Steven Gerrard’s side losing to Tierney’s Celtic on Sunday.
Celtic defender Kieran Tierney has admitted to the club’s official website that the Hoops would have scored more goals last Sunday, had it not been for the excellent performance of Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor.
Brendan Rodgers’ side earned a narrow 1-0 win thanks to Olivier Ntcham’s goal, but were denied on multiple occasions by veteran 36-year-old McGregor on multiple occasions – as well as the woodwork.
Of all of Gerrard’s 15 summer signings, McGregor has arguably been the club’s best bit of transfer business after bringing him back to Ibrox from Hull City on a free transfer, six years after leaving in the first place.
Tierney claimed that the performance of McGregor limited Celtic to just the one goal at Parkhead, with the Hoops dominant for the majority of the match and Rangers rarely troubling goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
“Every time we beat them it feels sweet,” Tierney said. “A lot of off the field stuff was going on in the lead-up to this, but I felt we answered a lot of critics in this game with our performance.
“If it wasn’t for their goalkeeper, it could have been a lot more than 1-0.”
McGregor has been in the news recently following the match, after his kick out at Kristoffer Ajer was overlooked by the SFA’s compliance officer Clare Whyte – which provoked a strong reaction on social media.
The 38-time Scotland international has kept six clean sheets in his 12 games since returning to Ibrox, conceding only eight goals with three of those coming at Fir Park against Motherwell.
Gerrard will be counting down the days before Rangers return to action after the international break, with the former Liverpool and England captain overseeing the Gers’ worst start to a Scottish Premiership season in 29 years.
They next face Dundee at Ibrox on September 15, while Celtic sit four points ahead of them on nine in second place.
