Leigh Griffiths has admitted to The Scottish Sun that it’ll take an ‘almighty push’ if Celtic are going to usurp Rangers to claim a 10th successive Premiership title this season.

Before a ball was kicked, Celtic, who had won the last nine league titles in succession, were nine months away from history.

But Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have been absolutely stunning this season and the Hoops are enormous underdogs to finish top of the pile come May.

That’s because the Ibrox outfit have a massive 24-point lead over Neil Lennon’s side in second and although the latter have three games in hand, it would take a brave person to back the Parkhead club to win all three.

Even if they do, that’s still a 15-point deficit and the truth is that the light Blues – who have won 22 and drawn three of their 25 Premiership games – just are not going to drop that many points from now until the end of the season.

And Griffiths has conceded that although it’s mathematically possible, it’s a giant ask for the Bhoys at this stage.

He said: “It’s still mathematically possible, but it’s going to be a big task to clinch the ten.

“Yes we’ve got a big points gap to try and claw back and we have not had the best of seasons. It’s going to take an almighty push from everybody involved. We need to take it every game at a time.”

Some Celtic fans might not like Griffiths’s admission here but, by the same token, many other supporters would cane him if he sugarcoated the mess that Lennon and his players find themselves in.

This is a measured, realistic view from the Scottish hitman and he’s right – an ‘almighty push’ just about sums it up.
