Rory Loy has backed David Turnbull to turn a corner with his performances after scoring as Celtic beat St Mirren on Wednesday. The midfielder helped to claim a 4-0 win at Parkhead.

Turnbull (86’) capped the night for Ange Postecoglou’s team after goals by Liel Abada (15’) and Kyogo Furuhashi (33’, 53’). He riffled home nearing stoppage time in spectacular style. Trevor Carson stood no chance at saving the hit into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.

Celtic played the ball into Turnbull on the edge of the St Mirren penalty area from a short corner. The 23-year-old only took one touch to get the ball onto his favoured right foot to shoot with no Buddies player close. His shot also flashed home before Carson could react.

Postecoglou introduced Turnbull in place of Matt O’Riley on 70 minutes with Celtic already leading St Mirren 3-0. The Bhoys coach has not started the Motherwell product in a league match since hosting Ross County on November 12. It was Turnbull’s sixth start of the term.

Turnbull has now made each of his last five Premiership appearances from the bench to hit 17 games this season. He has also now offered three goals and four assists over his outings after scoring on Wednesday. The five-cap Scotland ace last struck at home to Ross County.

Loy backs Turnbull to turn a corner after scoring as Celtic beat St Mirren

Postecoglou was without Turnbull for Celtic’s matches with Hibernian and Rangers around the New Year due to a suspension. The midfielder had earned a straight red card during his late cameo against St Johnstone on Christmas Eve for a high challenge on Remi Matthews.

Turnbull showed the positive impact he can offer Celtic after scoring as they beat St Mirren on Wednesday, though. Now, former Dundee and St Mirren forward Loy backs the Bhoys’ £3m arrival from Motherwell in August 2020 to build on his goal in their coming meetings.

Loy said on BBC Sportsound: “That goal will do David Turnbull the world of good because I think he has been lacking a bit of confidence.”
