Celtic’s defensive shortcomings were exposed badly against PSG.
Celtic were well beaten by PSG on Wednesday evening in a result which surprised nobody – even the scale of the 7-1 defeat.
That did not mean it was comfortable to watch, with some players turning in their own personal horror shows.
Dedryck Boyata was one of those, with the defender’s shortcomings badly exposed.
It was already clear that Celtic needed to sign a centre-back, and Boyata has exacerbated the situation.
Even if the Belgian had stepped up, Celtic would still need to make a new addition, given how the squad has been stretched this season with midfielder Nir Bitton having to play at centre-back.
Unfortunately for Boyata he has underlined that he himself may need replacing too.
He was guilty of giving the ball away and being caught out of position as he frantically chased those in possession, and made poor clearances.
Boyata looked overwhelmed and while PSG are a top side, this is the level to which Celtic aspire to compete with.
The centre-back must bounce back against Anderlecht in the next and final Champions League game, but the damage may already be done.
