Celtic were interested in Lee Gregory back in 2016, according to a report.

One-time Celtic target Lee Gregory is getting a bit of buzz at the moment after scoring for Millwall in Saturday’s win at Leeds United.

The 29-year-old striker was reported by The Mail 18 months ago to have been the subject of a “tentative enquiry” from Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers went on to sign Moussa Dembele, who has been a revelation in Glasgow, and the rest is history.

Gregory, whose contract expires this summer, could be available for free in the near future but this time the Northern Irishman should steer well clear.

At the time of Rodgers’s initial interest, the Millwall hitman – then valued at £2 million, according to The Sun – had just enjoyed a 20-goal season in League One but the Championship hasn’t been kind to him since the Lions’ promotion last term.

So far, Gregory has managed only five goals in 25 Championship games this season. Not only that but only one striker in the division has missed more goalscoring chances than him, having fluffed his lines on 12 occasions, one less than Britt Assombalonga for Middlesbrough.

With Dembele linked with a move away from Parkhead, Rodgers might need a prolific goalscorer to come in next summer and Gregory would be a thrifty option, not a smart one.
