Should Celtic step up their pursuit of Steven Caulker?

Celtic reached the final phase of Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday night by edging out Rosenborg in Norway, but did it come at a cost?

Erik Sviatchenko, who missed the first leg with a groin injury, lasted only 25 minutes of the 1-0 win in Trondheim and Celtic are yet to determine the extent of his latest setback.

With a Champions League playoff tie on the horizon, and the Bhoys set to begin the defence of their Premiership crown on Saturday, it’s hardly ideal for Brendan Rodgers, who has already lost centre-back Dedryck Boyata for three months.

There is something of a mini crisis developing for the Hoops, whose fit centre-halves are now Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer. Is it time that Rodgers acted on the speculation about Steven Caulker?

According to The Scottish Sun, the Celtic boss has sounded out a move for the QPR centre-back, who is in the final year of his contract at Loftus Road and has not represented the senior side since way back in October.

Even if Sviatchenko’s setback turns out to be minor, Boyata’s isn’t and another defensive option is needed – and who better than a man Rodgers already knows?

The former Swansea City boss brought him to South Wales on loan in 2011 and in light of Sviatchenko’s incident the Celtic manager should step up his pursuit.
