Much was expected of Cristian Gamboa when Celtic signed him from West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by Herald Scotland to be worth £1 million.
However, the 28-year-old right-back has struggled to play regularly for the Hoops and has made just 24 appearances in all competitions for the Glasgow giants so far, as stated on the club’s official website.
It is clear that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who signed the defender, does not rate Gamboa too highly, and it would make sense for the Scottish Premiership club to sell him in the summer transfer window – but only after the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
Gamboa is set to feature for Costa Rica at the World Cup, and the right-back could attract attention from other clubs should he perform well.
Celtic should hope that the right-back plays well in Russia, and the Hoops would be wise to cash in on the former West Brom defender after the competition is over and reinvest that money in other areas of the squad.
