Celtic need another centre-back before the end of the transfer window.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers must do one thing in the January transfer window before its deadline on the 31st at 11pm if his side are to continue their dominance north of the border – sign a centre-back.

The Hoops are beginning to look even weaker at the heart of their defence before the winter window began, with new signing Marvin Compper yet to make his debut for the club due to a calf injury suffered in training.

With the 32-year-old German sidelined, Rodgers is also without Erik Svaitchenko as he decided to let the five-time Denmark international rejoin FC Midtjylland before Compper suffered the muscle problem.

Kristoffer Ajer has impressed but he is still a teenager and against a side like Zenit St. Petersburg, he will surely struggle. Belgium international Dedryck Boyata is still largely error-prone, as is lofty centre-back Jozo Simunovic.

The 4-0 loss to Hearts proved that the latter duo cannot be trusted together, and it should convince Rodgers that a new centre-back is required with six days to go in the January transfer window.

The former Liverpool and Swansea City manager has been trying to spend his transfer budget shrewdly, but now he should equal the Hoops’ transfer record by rivalling Premier League side Brighton for Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay.

The Daily Record claim Brighton are eyeing a £6million move for the 22-year-old powerhouse, who moved to the Yorkshire club from Partick Thistle for just £350,000 last summer.

Lindsay has shown a rapid increase in potential in Yorkshire, becoming a mainstay of the Tykes side. At £6million, with the majority of his career ahead of him, he would be a pivotal signing.

With 64 Scottish Premiership appearances already under his belt, in which he has scored six goals, Lindsay has the potential to become Celtic’s newest first-choice centre-back for years to come if Rodgers is prepared to spend big.

But the £6million price tag, in the long run, would prove to be an absolute bargain if the Hoops can fend off interest from Brighton to land the 6ft 3in rock’s signature.
