Celtic tried to sign Henry Onyekuru during the January transfer window, but the forward now appears to be closing in on a Premier League move.

A recent report from Sky Sports suggested that Arsenal were in talks to sign Eupen forward Henry Onyekuru just a matter of months after he came close to joining Celtic in January.

The 19-year-old is attracting the attention of a number of Premier League clubs currently, according to Sky Sports, so the Hoops would certainly face a major uphill battle trying to win the race for the striker if they were interested once again, but news of the value of his release clause should arguably tempt the Hoops into making an ambitious move.

Sky Sports reports that Onyekuru will be free to leave Eupen if a side offers £6.8 million. And while that is a substantial amount for the Bhoys, it would arguably be a major statement of intent if they decided to spend a significant chunk of their transfer budget on the teenager, especially if they managed to subsequently win the race.

As mentioned, Onyekuru may initially find a move to England more appealing, especially if talks with a club like Arsenal progress well, but a move to Celtic would also have its benefits.

Unlike the other teams listed by Sky Sports as being in the running, Celtic can offer Champions League football as early as next season, and there is no question that they are building something special at Parkhead.

And while paying £6.8 million would be a major gamble for Celtic currently, signing the youngster would not only see the Hoops land a forward who scored 20 times this past season and appears to have a huge amount of potential, but it would also send out a major statement of intent if they were able to hold onto their star players while also signing one of Europe’s brightest prospects.
