Celtic are reportedly in pole position to sign Jack Hendry from Dundee before Wednesday’s deadline.
That report comes just 10 days after the Sunday Post suggested that Celtic felt that Hendry’s £1.5 million asking price was too high, despite the Daily Mail suggesting that the Scottish Premiership leaders had previously bid £500,000 for the 22-year-old.
With such an insignificant amount – for a team that has been involved in the Champions League – between what Celtic have reportedly offered and what Dundee are looking for before they allow Hendry to leave the club this month, surely it would be fair to suggest that the Bhoys will be taking a risk if they do not meet Dundee’s demands.
If Rodgers rates the youngster highly, then bridging the £1 million gap between respective valuations should be something that the Celtic hierarchy have absolutely no hesitation in doing.
If they decided against doing so for a player that Rodgers deemed to be a potential squad player, the ramifications may not have been too great, but with Rodgers reportedly a big fan of Hendry, he may be left with serious questions about their ambition if they are not willing to make the kind of bid that tempts Dundee into a sale.
And with Rodgers’ stock clearly very high due to his brilliant spell at Parkhead, it arguably makes little sense for the Celtic board to decide against meeting the asking price simply to save £1 million if it is at all likely to leave Rodgers feeling frustrated.
