Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell is said to be interesting Sunderland in the January transfer window.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Celtic are interested in snapping up Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell, but it is a transfer they definitely should not be pursuing.

Rodwell has been offered an escape route from Sunderland, with the club prepared to tear up his contract.

If the midfielder is given a free transfer, Celtic are said to be interested in offering Rodwell a new home.

However, Celtic would be making a big mistake by snapping up Rodwell.

Brendan Rodgers has obviously seen the potential upside to the transfer, as if he could get Rodwell back to his best, then Celtic would add genuine class to their squad.

As a youngster at Everton, Rodwell looked to have the world at his feet, and he was even capped by England.

However, Rodwell has not shown anything to suggest that he is close to fulfilling his potential for years.

The 26-year-old has been woeful in almost every appearance he has made for Sunderland, and he barely featured during his two-year spell at Manchester City.

That means it is over six years since Rodwell was performing to a consistently high standard, and Celtic are far better off taking a look at other options, rather than taking a gamble on the midfielder coming good at Parkhead.
