Celtic desperately need new signings this week after more injuries.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Brendan Rodgers desperately needs to add players to his beleaguered Celtic side as the injury list continues to mount following Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hibernian on Parkhead.

Leigh Griffiths and Craig Gordon both joined the likes of Anthony Ralston, Marvin Compper, Paddy Roberts, Stuart Armstrong, Jonny Hayes and Tom Rogic on the sidelines, as they were withdrawn from the weekend’s win.

The latest two injuries are not so severe as to panic Celtic, with Dorus de Vries as back-up in goal while Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard can replace Scotland international Griffiths.

Mikael Lustig of Celtic urges his team forward during the Betfred League Cup Final between Celtic and Motherwell at Hampden Park on November 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, the depth of the squad is shrinking and new signings are required. Rodgers is reportedly set to complete an 18-month loan deal for Chelsea winger Charly Musonda – a position that certainly needed strengthening.

But with less than three days before the window’s deadline, Rodgers has time against him and needs quick deals that can patch up his lack of depth.

It should convince him to look for loan moves and Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker-Peters is likely to be available on a short-term deal, with the Daily Mirror claiming on their transfer new blog (Sunday, 14:50) that Southampton are keen.

Mikael Lustig’s performances on the right side of defence have been more than questionable of late, with the Sweden international’s lack of pace a problem. But in the middle of the defence, that would prove less important.

Celtic need more central defenders, with Erik Sviatchenko joining FC Midtjylland on loan and Compper injured. Replacing 31-year-old Lustig at right-back would give Rodgers the option of playing the experienced Lustig in the middle of his back four.

Landing Walker-Peters, then, would solve such a positional crisis. His pace getting forward but his defensive maturity for a 20-year-old is more than enough talent to impress in the Scottish Premiership – as well as the Europa League.
