Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic should make a move for Dundee defender Steven Caulker in the summer transfer window.

Dundee manager Neil McCann suggested to The Herald last month that Steven Caulker could be sold in the summer transfer window, and that should invite Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers to make a move.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Cardiff City central defender joined Dundee in the January transfer window after leaving Queens Park Rangers.

While reflecting on Dundee’s decision to reject Rosenborg’s bid for Caulker in April, McCann told The Herald last month: “He is a sought after player and he has a wonderful pedigree, I had to sweet talk him to get him to Dundee because it wouldn’t have been his first choice.

“Yeah, it’s a big risk to knock that money back for Steven Caulker but if we accepted it, we might not have been in the Premiership – it was a brave decision.

“I’m not saying we won’t lose Steven in the summer, but the club did some wonderful work to retain him on a longer contract.”

Caulker was superb for Dundee in the second half of this past season, and it is clear that the English centre-back is capable of succeeding in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic could do with an experienced and capable central defender for the 2018-19 campaign, with Dedryck Boyata making mistakes from time to time and Marvin Compper struggling to make any impact since his January move from RB Leipzig.

In February 2018, Caulker told Sky Sports that he had turned down a move to Celtic in the summer of 2017 and work again with his former Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers to remain at QPR.

The former Liverpool boss should try to convince the 26-year-old centre-back to move to Celtic Park in the summer transfer window, as he would be a very good long-term signing for the Glasgow giants.
