Celtic may need to strengthen their right-back options during the summer.

One of Celtic’s main priorities this summer is certainly going to be signing a new right-back, with doubts over the futures over both Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa at Parkhead.

Lustig’s form has improved since Neil Lennon returned as manager. But even if the Swede sticks around beyond this summer, it would arguably be a huge gamble, and potentially a mistake, to rely on him to be first-choice heading into next season.

He could still contribute however, so that may allow Celtic to focus on a signing that will not break the bank and allow them to spend more of their budget on other areas of the squad.

And with that in mind, perhaps the Bhoys should seriously look at Danny Simpson, amid reports from the Daily Mail suggesting that he will be allowed to leave Leicester City on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old – who currently earns £45,000-a-week (via Spotrac) – is a Premier League title winner, and the Mail’s report suggests that there are some sides interested in handing him the chance to stay in England’s top flight.

He may be edging towards the twilight of his career, but if Celtic cannot find the player that they want to be their long-term right-back during the coming months, then a bid for Simpson could a very good option.

And with the former Manchester United trainee set to be available on a free transfer, perhaps there is the potential for a move to Parkhead to prove to be an inspired one.
