Manchester United youngster Dean Henderson is a man in demand – but will Celtic join the chase?
Celtic signing Fraser Forster from Newcastle United for just £2 million in 2012, per the BBC, must go down as one of the most inspired deals in recent Scottish football history.
Forster had impressed hugely during two previous seasons on loan at Parkhead and, when making his deal permanent, the then-24-year-old made it clear that he had two ambitious on his mind – ‘win things as a team and improve as an individual’, he told the BBC.
He certainly did that, winning the next two Scottish Premiership titles before sealing a £10 million move to the Premier League with Southampton (BBC).
More than seven years after Forster first arrived in Glasgow as a fresh faced and unproven youngster, Celtic should give some thought to another highly-talented Premier League goalkeeper who needs a club to help him fulfil his vast potential.
Forster 2.0?
Celtic are notable by their absence from a lengthy list ranging from Tottenham and Arsenal to Udinese and Benfica. However, considering that manager Brendan Rodgers has taken to luring England’s brightest talents to Parkhead, including Moussa Dembele, Kundai Benyu and Olivier Ntcham, the Scottish champions will surely be aware of Henderson’s impending availability.
With 36-year-old Dorus de Vries out of contract in the summer, Celtic need a back-up for the evergreen Craig Gordon and Henderson could be that man.
Where better to learn his trade than under one of the best managers around when it comes to developing players. And the evolution of Forster from a gangly youngster to fully-fledged England international should show Henderson the value of making a move north of the border.
It seems only a matter of time before Celtic join the race.
