Should Celtic consider Newcastle United’s Rob Elliot as a long-term successor for Craig Gordon?
According to Sky Sports, Celtic intend on “reviewing their goalkeeping options” when Scott Bain returns to parent club Dundee at the end of this season.
The 26-year-old was signed on a half-season loan after first-choice keeper Craig Gordon was ruled out for 12 weeks with a knee injury.
If and when Celtic do review the situation in the summer, should Brendan Rodgers take a look at Newcastle United’s Rob Elliot?
The 31-year-old’s long-term future at Newcastle seems very bleak at the moment and Elliot is no longer Rafael Benitez’s second-choice option after signing Martin Dubravka on loan last month.
That being said, the Republic of Ireland international remains a very decent keeper nevertheless and one who Rodgers should consider bringing to Glasgow this summer.
Gordon is 35 and although his injury was unfortunate, it forced the Hoops boss to plan for life without him in the short term and Rodgers should look at replacing him in the long term too.
He might have another year or two left, but Celtic are three years away from the elusive 10-in-a-row – assuming they win the Premiership this season – and such an ambition is compromised by players who might well be past it by then.
Elliot’s struggles at Newcastle do not reflect his ability as a goalkeeper and he would be a fantastic summer addition.
