Celtic should remain keen on signing Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna.
Celtic will need defensive reinforcements this summer – and surely Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna will be back on Brendan Rodgers’ radar.
The Bhoys will lose Dedryck Boyata when his contract expires this summer, whilst Filip Benkovic will head back to Leicester City after the expiration of his loan deal.
That means that Celtic will be losing two star centre backs without bringing in any money for either of them, and most of Celtic’s budget will have to go into signing defenders.
Their top target last summer, before landing Benkovic on loan, was Aberdeen ace Scott McKenna, with Rodgers confirming to BBC that he likes McKenna a lot, but couldn’t tempt the Dons into a deal.
Celtic should go back in for McKenna, but would be wise to try and convince Aberdeen to sell by offering them a part-exchange deal alongside some money.
Aberdeen wanted both Lewis Morgan and Jonny Hayes in January according to The Express. but couldn’t land either. Even with Hayes faring well at left back, landing one of Scotland’s top young defenders would be worth offering up the Irishman back to his former club.
With so many midfield options, even giving up Morgan may be worth considering in order to land McKenna, whilst out of favour defender Jack Hendry would be another option given that he would be a direct replacement for McKenna at Pittodrie.
McKenna, a Scotland international regular already at 22, should be Celtic’s top target given that Rodgers has publicly admitted that he rates him highly – but they may have to get creative to do it.
