Newcastle United’s Tim Krul should be targeted by Celtic after squad omission.
Tim Krul has not been included in Newcastle United’s squad for their trip to Ireland this week.
Logically, the Dutch goalkeeper is, in that case, unwanted by manager Rafael Benitez and Celtic should try bringing him to Glasgow this summer.
Craig Gordon was in superb form for the Hoops last season, helping Brendan Rodgers’s side to a domestic treble without losing a single match.
But there has been signs during the off-season that Rodgers needs an upgrade on the Scotland international.
First, the 34-year-old was arguably culpable for both of England’s goals in the Three Lions 2-2 draw with Scotland in a World Cup qualifier in June, before then making a silly error in Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Rapid Vienna earlier this month.
Gordon needs better competition with the Bhoys next season – competition that Dorus De Vries is very unlikely to provide – and Krul could be perfect.
The Newcastle ace, who spent last season with Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, is a better and younger keeper than Gordon and his addition would surely strengthen the Hoops.
With his contract set to expire next summer, Rodgers would not need to break the bank to get him and, with the Scot looking increasingly shakey, he certainly should.
