Celtic should follow Griffiths talks with new deal for Scott Brown

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has suggested that he is close to agreeing a new contract with the club.

It would have delighted many Celtic fans when Leigh Griffiths suggested, in comments reported by BBC Sport, that he is closing in on signing a new deal at Parkhead.

Griffiths has been a superb servant for the Hoops and the forward committing his future to the Scottish Premiership champions will provide a major boost after a difficult transfer window for Brendan Rodgers.

Griffiths certainly deserves the new deal, and as soon as those terms are finalised, Celtic should arguably switch their attention immediately to the situation surrounding Scott Brown’s future.

Transfermarkt shows that Brown’s deal expires at the end of the season. It is understandable that Celtic would be prepared to let his contract run down somewhat before they enter talks given his age, but the 33-year-old is showing the kind of form that should leave the Bhoys looking to open negotiations in the very near future.

Brown continues to find himself at the very top of his game. Since Rodgers arrived, it is difficult to remember too many domestic games which have seen the Hoops captain lose the midfield battle to his opponent.

With the players that he currently has around him, there seems to be only one reason why Brown may not be able to continue to dictate games for a number of years – and that is the fact that his contract looks set to expire this summer.

It would be a huge shock if talks did not take place imminently, but getting Brown to extend his contract – presumably after Griffiths has also put pen to paper on his own extension – would be a superb boost for Rodgers’ men and would certainly help put any summer disappointment behind them.
