Lustig or midfielder Nir Bitton may be able to fill in for Scottish Premiership duties, but Celtic’s lack of able defensive depth will cost them in Europe, even against sides of a lesser calibre.
To progress in the Europa League after the New Year, assuming they qualify, Rodgers should target Arsenal defender Calum Chambers for loan in January.
The 22-year-old is currently sidelined with a hip injury, but The Mirror reports that he will be fit again in November.
With Arsenal’s preferred back three established and Per Mertesacker and Rob Holding providing back-up, the Gunners might sanction a loan for Chambers in the second half of the season.
He spent last season with Middlesbrough when Arsene Wenger had the same defensive options to choose from.
It would be an ambitious move by Celtic, but Chambers, who is yet to play in the Europa League this season so would not be cup tied, would give them some extra class to deal with European attacks.
