Shaun Rooney has signed for Fleetwood Town, and maybe we shouldn’t be surprised to see the Celtic-mad defender join Scott Brown.

Brown took his first steps into management recently by taking the Fleetwood job, replacing ex-Celtic defender Stephen Crainey.

Brown was coaching at Aberdeen alongside Stephen Glass, but Glass was sacked earlier this year.

New boss Jim Goodwin didn’t have plans for Brown and he decided to not just leave Aberdeen but also hang up his boots.

One year on from leaving Celtic, Brown is now preparing for his first season as a manager – and has made his first signing.

Brown has unsurprisingly gone back to the Scottish market to bring a key addition to Fleetwood.

Fleetwood confirmed on Wednesday evening that they have snapped up defender Shaun Rooney.

Rooney is out of contract at St Johnstone this summer and has decided to test himself in England again after a previous stint at York City.

The right back has penned a two-year deal at Fleetwood and will now look to build on his great work at St Johnstone.

Rooney won a domestic cup double with St Johnstone in the 2020-21 season before helping keep them up this term.

Rooney has impressed in Scotland and his move to England isn’t a shock – especially given that it’s Brown in charge.

The 25-year-old is a noted Celtic fan and has even posted photos mocking Rangers, pretending to drink their ‘tears’.

Brown was a hero to all Celtic fans and Rooney will have watched him rack up the trophies in green and white hoops.

Once Rooney got the call from Brown, he most likely wanted to jump at the chance to work under him.

Celtic fans will no doubt have one eye on how Brown and Rooney fare in England next season with a real Bhoys connection there now.
