Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has been confirmed as Nottingham Forest’s new boss.

The Reds announced on Tuesday on their official website that the Parkhead legend will succeed Aitor Karanka at the City Ground.

O’Neill, who played 371 games and won the European Cup twice as a Forest player, ended his five-year spell as Republic of Ireland boss last November and has taken over a Reds side ninth in the Championship, four points outside the playoff places.

The 66-year-old enjoyed a fruitful spell as Hoops manager, taking over at the Scottish Premiership club in the summer of 2000 as John Barnes’ successor following two seasons in which bitter rivals Rangers won the title.

During his time as Celtic boss, O’Neill won three Scottish Premier League titles, three Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup, as well as finishing runner-up in the UEFA Cup in 2003.

O’Neill is a veteran in the game, having also managed the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Sunderland, but the Forest job is his first in club management since 2013.
