Celtic have been linked with a move for Switzerland defender Fabian Schar after reports suggested the centre-back will leave La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna, and his World Cup performance suggests he will be a superb acquisition.

Spanish outlet El Desmarque claim that 26-year-old defender Schar is expected to leave Deportivo this summer after the club were relegated into the second division of Spanish football.

It is believed that he will leave due to his tiny relegation release clause, which stands at just £3.5million. The report claims Celtic are keen, but are not alone in their interest for the 40-time Switzerland international.

German club Hannover 96 are also keen on taking Schar to the Bundesliga, while Italian giants Lazio are looking to add the defender to their side as they push for European qualification next term.

If Celtic are indeed keen on Schar, Brendan Rodgers will have been watching Switzerland’s excellent 1-1 draw against Brazil on Sunday as Steven Zuber cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s excellent opener.

Schar was a rock throughout, keeping Gabriel Jesus quiet and dispossessing Neymar on a regular basis. If Sunday’s performance is anything to go buy, Celtic must snap up Schar.

Indeed, if the Hoops can win the race for the defender for a price as low as £3.5million, it would prove to be a major coup for the Scottish champions as they embark on another Champions League campaign.
