Glasgow Rangers were keen on bringing the young midfielder to Ibrox, while their Scottish Premiership rivals were also interested.

Celtic and Rangers appear to have missed out after Sunderland announced on their official website that young midfielder Ethan Robson has signed a new contract with the Black Cats.

Robson’s emergence has been one of the few positives to have arisen from the season for Sunderland, with Chris Coleman’s side bottom of the Championship currently and looking in serious danger of suffering back to back relegations.
The Sun reported that the Old Firm pair were looking at doing a deal that would see the prospect move to either Parkhead or Ibrox for just £150,000 in compensation, but it now appears that a move this summer is off the table with the news that he has extended his contract until 2020.

And after the deal was announced, Robson took to social media to comment on the fresh terms – though it was clear that he did not want to get carried away as the club desperately fight to keep themselves away from League One.
While Celtic and Rangers may have missed out this time around, the length of the contract that Robson has signed should give them some hope that something may be potentially possible further down the line.
The contract is not exactly long-term and that may be give any interested club something to keep an eye and may leave Black Cats fans slightly concerned that it may not be too long until Robson’s future is a talking point once again.
