Celtic and Rangers were linked with a move for Lawrence Shankland earlier this summer.

On May 19, The Chronicle claimed that the Old Firm duo were interested in the Scottish striker, who scored 34 goals Ayr United last season.

Okay most of them were in the Championship, but his form was seemingly enough to alert the likes of Rangers and Celtic nonetheless.

As it were, neither side went for him and the 24-year-old – once released by the Gers – wound up staying in the Championship by signing for Dundee United. And it looks like Shankland is set for another stand-out season in the second tier.

He scored two first-half goals in this afternoon’s win over Dunfermline to make it seven goals in his first three games this season.

It’s a stunning record and although Celtic and Rangers weren’t interested enough to take a punt, why weren’t other Scottish Premiership sides?

In total, Shankland, who also scored twice in the League Cup, has nine in seven for the Terrors so far.

If he hits the 30-goal mark in all competitions yet again, surely a top-flight club will take an interest. Whether it’s the Hoops or Steven Gerrard is another thing, though.
