Celtic look set to offload midfielder Oliver Abildgaard just months into his season-long loan spell from Russian side Rubin Kazan.

RB Sport in Russia report that Abildgaard ‘will leave Celtic in January’ with the Bhoys working on breaking his loan spell at Parkhead.

Celtic just haven’t seen enough from Abildgaard and are now ready to scrap his loan move much earlier than expected.

Abildgaard joined Celtic on a season-long loan spell back in September but it just hasn’t gone to plan.

The Dane – who played with Celtic ace Carl Starfelt at Rubin Kazan – has played just nine times for Celtic for a total of 156 minutes.

Abildgaard, a giant holding midfielder at 6ft 4in, just hasn’t proven himself to Ange Postecoglou and will now seemingly leave Glasgow.

The report does though add that Abildgaard isn’t expected to return to play for Kazan and his representatives will instead seek a move elsewhere in Europe.

Abildgaard exit the latest indication of Celtic’s midfield changes

Celtic just have so much quality in midfield that breaking in can be a little tricky.

Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley are truly exceptional whilst David Turnbull and Aaron Mooy offer outstanding depth.

Abildgaard just hasn’t managed to force his way in and the same goes for Yosuke Ideguchi.

The Daily Mail reported on Monday that Ideguchi is poised to leave Celtic for a return to Japan just a year after arriving from Gamba Osaka.

Ideguchi is a similar tale to Abildgaard; a player seen as being ideal cover for McGregor in a deep role for Celtic but just never able to get going.

Postecoglou is being ruthless here, seemingly offloading both Ideguchi and Abildgaard having failed to reach the high standards set at Celtic.

Yokohama F. Marinos utility man Tomoki Iwata will now seemingly replace the duo, with the J1 League Player of the Year for 2022 hopefully up to the challenge at Celtic.
