Neil Lennon is in talks to appoint a former Celtic midfielder as his assistant boss at Omonia Nicosia – but it’s Mark Fotheringham rather than Scott Brown.

Lennon has made the shock move to Cyprus, becoming Omonia manager earlier this week after more than a year out of the game.

Since leaving Celtic in February 2021, Lennon has mostly been working as a pundit and missed out on the Sunderland job.

Now back in management with a shock trip to Cyprus, Lennon is already looking to surround himself with some familiarity.

The Scottish Sun report that Fotheringham is in talks to join Omonia, becoming Lennon’s assistant if a deal is done.

Lennon played alongside Fotheringham at Celtic back in the early 2000’s, although Fotheringham was just a youngster and hardly a first-team regular.

The Northern Irishman seemingly values Fotheringham’s coaching ability though, and he knows a little about Cypriot football.

In his playing days, Fotheringham turned out for Anorthosis Famagusta and may bring some vital knowledge to Lennon’s backroom team.

Talks have been going on fro a couple of days now and it looks like Fotheringham will be joining Lennon very, very soon.

Lennon wants the deal done before this weekend, when Omonia will be taking on Doxa.

Many thought that the stars were aligning for Lennon to reunite with another former Celtic ace in Scott Brown.

Brown left Aberdeen earlier this week and will seemingly move into coaching elsewhere following the exit of Stephen Glass.

Leaving Aberdeen just as Lennon secured a new job seemed like more than a coincidence, with Brown potentially ideal to support Lennon.

Instead, it looks like Fotheringham will be Lennon’s right hand man in Cyprus, with that additional knowledge of Cypriot football possibly vital.
