Should Celtic just pay the money for Scott McKenna this time around.

It’s that time of the year again, the time when Celtic are being linked with Scott McKenna.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Hoops have seen a £5 million bid knocked back by Aberdeen for their young centre-back

The Dons want double what Celtic reportedly offered, which means that Neil Lennon will have to break the club’s transfer record to bring the Scotland international to Parkhead – and the Northern Irish manager should.

McKenna, who only turns 23 in November, is a really exciting talent and if it takes £10 million to sign him – £1 million more than Odsonne Edouard, the club’s most expensive signing of all time – then it’s a smart decision on a football and a business level.

One or two stand-out seasons for Celtic and they could very possibly double their money if he attracts interest from England.

After all, Kieran Tierney, who is also 22, is currently being linked with a £25 million switch to the Premier League and there’s no reason why the same money won’t be offered for McKenna down the line, if he does the business.

But would he impress in Glasgow? In a word, yes. The Aberdeen star has a massive future ahead of him in football and there isn’t much doubt that Lennon, who bought and sold Virgil van Dijk, wouldn’t take him to the next level in regards to coaching.

With Dedryck Boyata gone, Lennon badly needs a top-class replacement and a bank-breaking move for McKenna makes sense on every level. Two years from now, it’s very likely that it’ll have proved a brilliant investment for football and monetary reasons.
