Odsonne Edouard must be followed to Celtic by another striker.
Brendan Rodgers excited Celtic fans this past weekend by revealing that there was a “very, very good chance” of him signing Odsonne Edouard on a permanent basis.
The French striker scored twice against Rangers on Sunday to make it 11 goals in 12 starts since joining the Hoops on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
According to The Daily Mail, Celtic could have to fork out as much as £7 million for the 20-year-old, who could prove to be worth every penny, but Rodgers must also add another striker to his ranks during the off-season.
It looks increasingly likely that Moussa Dembele will leave Parkhead this summer, meaning that Leigh Griffiths and Edouard would represent Rodgers’s only striking options.
Those two would probably be enough to help Celtic win an eighth successive Premiership title next term but it’s not enough if the Scottish giants want to make headway in Europe.
Rodgers, who is 90 minutes away from delivering back-to-back domestic trebles, must take the Bhoys to the next level now and that involves reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.
It’s a big challenge but one that he should meet head on and simply put the Northern Irishman will need more firepower to increase the chances of that happening.
Edouard is an excellent young striker but neither he or Griffiths has the ability or the experience to be prolific on the biggest stage and although luring somebody of that profile to Glasgow is another challenge, it’s very necessary if Rodgers wants to keep improving Celtic.
