Celtic look set to miss out on the signing of Aleksandar Vukotic with Voetbral Krant reporting that the centre-back is likely to join KV Mechelen rather than the Scottish Premiership champions.

The Hoops have got used to replacing key players and this summer will be no different.

Celtic have already announced that Jozo Simunovic has played his last game for the club while Kristoffer Ajer may be set to follow in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and co by heading south of the border.

Defensive reinforcements will be top of Nicky Hammond’s hit-list, then, with Vukotic one of a number of talented centre-halves mentioned as potential additions in recent weeks (Le Soir).

A Serbia-born 24-year-old, Vukotic has been one of the most impressive stoppers in Belgium since moving to Waasland-Beveran in 2018.

But while the 6ft 7ins giant will be on the move sooner rather than later, his time in the land of chocolates and moustachioed detectives is not necessarily coming to an end.

Reports from Belgium this week claim that Vukotic is set to swap one Jupiler League outfit for another with a move to Mechelen on the cards.

Mechelen finished an impressive sixth in the top-flight during 2019/20, and will be hoping for a place in Europe next season with one of the country’s top defensive talents set to arrive.

Celtic, then, will be forced to look elsewhere.
