Mikey Johnston could leave Celtic with Ronny Deila now keen to take him to Belgium with Standard Liege this summer.

The Bhoys have mostly focused on incomings this summer with Benjamin Siegrist, Moritz Jenz, Alexandro Bernabei and Aaron Mooy added to the squad.

When you factor in permanent deals for Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota, Celtic look well-placed for another league title.

There may now be some departures for Celtic, with a number of players primed for loan or permanent exits before the transfer deadline.

Mikey Johnston could leave Celtic

The latest name linked with a move away is Mikey Johnston, with the Celtic winger potentially on the move this summer.

The Scottish Sun report that Celtic are set to allow Johnston to leave the club on loan in order to play first-team minutes.

It’s stated that Ange Postecoglou will sanction Johnston’s exit on a temporary basis with a number of clubs interested.

The main suitor right now is Standard Liege, who are managed by former Celtic boss Ronny Deila.

Johnston was coming through the ranks at Celtic during Deila’s time there and made his first-team debut just a year after the Norwegian’s exit.

Johnston, 23, has managed 78 appearances and 11 goals in the Celtic first team.

The problem for Johnston is that there is huge competition for places at Celtic; Jota, Liel Abada, Daizen Maeda and James Forrest can all play out wide.

Injuries have been a problem for Johnston too, and he has never played more than 15 league games in a single season.

That just isn’t good enough for a 23-year-old and it’s now time for Johnston to go out and play regularly.

Standard Liege aren’t alone though as English clubs in the Championship and League One, as well as Scottish Premiership teams, are all keen on Johnston.

This is best for all parties and Johnston – hailed as a ‘brilliant talent’ by Callum McGregor – will hopefully go out and return to Celtic a better player in 2023.
