Former Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton is now the Head of Recruitment at Celtic.
Celtic Head of Recruitment Lee Congerton has revealed to The Scottish Sun that he was frustrated when he was the sporting director at Sunderland.
According to The Sunderland Echo, Congerton handed in his notice at Sunderland at the same time as Dick Advocaat’s resignation as the manager in October 2015
Earlier this week, the Welshman was appointed the Celtic chief, and he has admitted his frustrations at the Black Cats.
“I’d actually signed a contract in Ukraine after leaving Hamburg to go and work with Frank again,” Congerton told The Scottish Sun.
“But then the civil war started. Maybe I’d have been better going into the civil war than going to Sunderland . . .
“No, it’s a marvellous club and I enjoyed working there with some wonderful people, but they were bottom of the league when I arrived and we twice just stayed up.
“Sunderland have signed more free transfers, and more loans, than any other team in Premier League history, and that tells you that the strategy in place was very much about patching up and survival.”
Congerton’s comments about Sunderland highlight just how bad in a state the club are and have been for a while.
The Black Cats are a massive club and have a strong fanbase, but on the pitch the team have been underperforming for years.
Sunderland are at the bottom of the Premier League table at the moment with 19 points from 27 matches.
David Moyes’s side will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Burnley at the Stadium of Light in the league.
The Black Cats have to pick up maximum points from the encounter in order to retain their chances of escaping the drop.
