The Celtic-daft Scot has a decent goalscoring record against Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.

Johnny Russell made headlines on Saturday for expressing an ambition to join Celtic – and if his record against Rangers is anything to go by, he might just be an asset.

Russell, speaking on BBC Sportsound [18/10/2019], revealed that it was a lifelong dream of his to join the Parkhead club and one that he isn’t giving up on just yet.

The 29-year-old’s allegiances toward Celtic offer an insight into the elation he must have felt scoring against their bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers.

Back in 2013, Russell scored twice for Dundee United in knocking the Gers out of the Scottish Cup in the round of 16.

Overall, the Scottish attacker has four goals in nine outings against the Ibrox outfit [Transfermarkt], but is that enough to tempt Celtic? Probably not.

Not only does Russell turn 30 in April, but you have to wonder whether Hoops boss Neil Lennon needs him.

As of right now, Lennon has Odsonne Edouard, Vakoun Issouf Bayo and the injured Leigh Griffiths on the books at Lennoxtown. Bayo is unproven, but Edouard and Griffiths are comfortably more prolific marksmen than Russell was, with the former Tangerines star only managing 31 goals in 102 outings.

Plus, he is in the MLS right now, plying his trade with Sporting Kansas City and earning £515,000 per year [Derby Telegraph].

Celtic could definitely afford to match or better his salary – which equates to around £10,000 per week – but does his Rangers record mean that Lennon will be reaching for the telephone? No.
