Missing out on Fabian Schar to Newcastle United must be considered a major blow for Celtic now, considering the doubts over Dedryck Boyata’s future.

Boyata’s agent has publicly criticised Celtic in recent times, with the Belgian defender now looking likely to leave Parkhead.

It leaves Celtic’s centre-back options looking very short, and Brendan Rodgers may wish he had pushed harder for Schar now.

Schar was a long-term target for Celtic, and was scouted by the Bhoys at the World Cup, as reported by El Desmarque.

However, the Bhoys failed to get a deal over the line, which enabled Newcastle to swoop.

Newcastle ended up paying just £3 million for the Switzerland international (the Guardian), who looks to be one of the bargain deals of the summer.

And Rodgers may well have some regrets over not pushing harder for a deal.

Schar could have been an ideal replacement for Boyata at Celtic, and not snapping him up while they had the chance looks like an error for the Glasgow side.
