According to a report in The Sun, Celtic were leading the race to sign Newcastle United’s Chancel Mbemba, but it seems that they will be disappointed in their pursuit of the centre-back.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has reportedly felt that Mbemba would make a good addition to his side, as he looks to bolster his defence.

However, Newcastle’s failure to get deals over the line so far this month, has meant that Rafael Benitez now wants to keep his current squad in tact, according to the Northern Echo.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez looks on during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Burnley at Old Trafford on December 26, 2017 in Manchester, England.

Mbemba may not have featured regularly for Newcastle this term, but Benitez knows that he would be left too short at the back, if he was to allow the Congolese international to depart.

Celtic are now set to have to look elsewhere, if Rodgers still wants to add to his backline.

Celtic have already snapped up Red Bull Leipzig defender Marvin Compper this month, and more additions are thought to be being targeted.

Celtic’s progress in Europe has strengthened Rodgers’ transfer budget, and the Bhoys could now be active in the coming weeks, even after seemingly missing out on Mbemba.
