Reto Ziegler won’t have pleased Brendan Rodgers with his 2015 comments on Liverpool – but Celtic are still interested in signing him.

Reto Ziegler may have a bit of explaining to do if he signs for Celtic this summer.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at Swiss side FC Sion and has his heart set on a new challenge. And the experienced defender has claimed that Scottish champions Celtic are set to challenge La Liga’s mid-table regulars Real Betis for his signature.

“The offers from Celtic and Betis are an honour for me,” Ziegler told the Scottish Sun. “But without wanting to sound snooty, I think I deserve it, I’ve had a good season.”

The 35-time Swiss international is hardly the sort of player usually on Celtic’s wishlist, with a number of young, affordable and under-the-radar talents arriving at Parkhead in recent seasons. However, the former Tottenham and Juventus defender could be a handy addition thanks to his ability to flit between centre-half and left-back.

Furthermore, his experience could come in useful in a side made up of talented youngsters.

Nonetheless, if Ziegler chooses Glasgow over Andalucia, he may be hoping manager Brendan Rodgers didn’t read his comments after Sion drew 1-1 with Liverpool in the 2015/16 Europa League group stages.

“We knew if we could put them under pressure and score a goal we’d have a chance, they are a bit weak mentally,” Ziegler said after a Sion equaliser condemned Liverpool to just one win in eight games in all competitions, as reported by Goal.

Just two days later, Rodgers was axed at Anfield.

However, with Celtic flying under the Northern Irishman, he should be willing to let bygones be bygones.
