John Hartson has revealed that Celtic are trying to sign Mohamed Elyounoussi on a permanent basis.
The Norway international has been a revelation since joining the Hoops on a season-long loan from Southampton and scored twice in the League Cup semi-final win over Hibernian last weekend.
In doing so, the 25-year-old winger now has seven goals in 10 games across all competitions for Celtic.
Bhoys boss Neil Lennon acknowledged Elyounoussi’s contribution in speaking to the media after the Hibs game but refused to divulge whether the club was planning on signing him long term.
Here’s what Hartson told The Scottish Sun: “Elyounoussi looks a top player to me and I hear Celtic will try to turn his loan into a permanent deal if they can.”
Southampton paid £16 million on Elyounoussi only in 2018 and the tricky thing about a permanent deal is that Celtic would have to pay a huge amount to take him to Glasgow.
If the Saints are willing to part ways, they’ll want to recoup as much as possible and although some loss is inevitable after flopping in the Premier League last season, the English side could still ask for a major sum in the context of the Bhoys’ finances.
Odsonne Edouard at £9 million is Celtic’s most expensive signing to date, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Elyounoussi betters that price.
