The Celtic star has been heavily linked with a move away from Parkhead, but Brendan Rodgers still sees him as a key member of his squad.
Celtic legend Stiliyan Petrov delivered his verdict on Dedryck Boyata when speaking exclusively to BT Sport, amidst rumours linking the Belgian with an exit from Parkhead.
The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from Celtic in the summer, but he eventually remained in Glasgow.
Fulham offered £9 million for his services – a bid that was subsequently rejected by the Hoops, according to a report from the London Evening Standard.
Boyata seemed like he wanted to move to the Premier League, but with the transfer window now closed in England, that will not be a possibility.
And Petrov, who won four league titles with Celtic, threw his hat into the ring regarding the Belgium international’s situation at Parkhead, as quoted by BT Sport:
“It’s really sad to see, you know. When you’re a footballer you like to play for a club like Celtic, you like to perform at the highest level.”
Petrov seemed to be hinting that Boyata should have more pride in playing for Celtic, rather than angling for a move away from the club.
Brendan Rodgers’ could certainly have used Boyata in Athens last night, after his side crashed out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage, losing 3-2 on aggregate to the Greek side.
