Graeme Murty is in charge of Glasgow Rangers, but could Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke be a contender for the Ibrox role in the summer?

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic legend David Provan has suggested in The Scottish Sun that Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke will not take the Rangers managerial role.

Graeme Murty is in charge of Rangers at the moment, but his current deal with the Gers in this particular role is until the end of the season.

With the Gers out of the running for the Scottish Premiership title this season, many will wonder if Murty will be given the managerial role at Ibrox in the long run, or if he will go back to working with the youth team.

Clarke is doing a wonderful job at Kilmarnock at the moment, and many Rangers fans have called on the club on social networking site Twitter to hand the 54-year-old the job at Ibrox in the summer, as reported on HITC Sport.

Former Celtic and Scotland international winger Provan, though, does not believe that Clarke will take the Rangers managerial job.

Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson has also suggested that Clarke will not take the managerial job at the Gers and would prefer taking charge of Celtic.

Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “After Clarke dented Graeme Murty’s chances of the gig by winning at Ibrox, the Rangers board is being urged to make a move for him. They could do a lot worse, but Steve would be off his head to take the Gers job.”

“The Rangers job is now the Celtic job of the early nineties,” added Provan. “Given the gulf in resources and player quality it’s mission impossible.

“Where Sir David Murray once lorded it over a skint Celtic board, we now have role reversal. Every fiver Gers find, Celts could put down £20. All the more reason for Clarke to resist any overtures from Ibrox.”

Thompson is quoted as saying by Insidefutbol.com: “I think there would be a better chance of Steve Clarke going to Celtic should Brendan Rodgers ever leave than him going to Rangers.”

Stick with Murty

Recent results of Rangers have been disappointing, but Murty cannot be judged based on them.

Murty has done a wonderful job over the past few months, and he should be given the chance to show what he is capable of next season.
