Celtic legend Johan Mjallby has told BetStars that he believes Brendan Rodgers remains the top dog in the Scottish Premiership even after the appointment of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard, 38, has wasted no time in remoulding his Rangers squad, bringing in Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Jamie Murphy, with a new striker also expected.

He has also gone about improving the fitness of the Gers squad, with many suggesting that the reason Celtic enjoyed such success over their Old Firm rivals last term was due to the Light Blues’ lack of stamina.

Brendan Rodgers, manager of Celtic holds the Scottish Cup Trophy following the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Celtic at Hampden Park on May 19, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mjallby, who played for Celtic for six years and won three Scottish Premiership titles, is excited to see what Gerrard brings to the table but believes Rodgers remains the better manager due to the latter’s experience.

“You have to look at their experience. Brendan has a lot of experience from the Premier League but it will be interesting to see what Steven Gerrard can do at Rangers and see if they are really ready to challenge Celtic this season,” Mjallby said.

“There are a lot of questions but it’s a great opportunity for Steven Gerrard to learn his trade and become a very good manager. I would still rate Brendan Rodgers above him at the moment because his experience is so important.”

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers finished way back in third last season, and Gerrard will be hoping to do what Mark Warburton, Graeme Murty and Pedro Caixinha have all failed to do – go toe-to-toe with Rodgers and Celtic.

Rangers begin their campaign on July 12 in the first round of Europa League qualifying against Macedonian minnows FK Shkupi at Ibrox, before travelling to Macedonia a week later.
