HITC Sport understands a host of Championship clubs are battling it out to sign free agent Nicky Maynard following his exit from Cardiff City.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the player that former Cardiff City striker Nicky Maynard is being chased by a number of top Championship sides and Scottish champions Celtic.

Maynard is regarded as one of the best strikers in the Championship available on a free transfer this summer after seeing out his contract at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Maynard has scored more than 40 Championship goals in his career and enjoyed his most prolific form at Bristol City.

The 28-year-old endured a frustrating three-year spell at Cardiff after his arrival from West Ham in the summer of 2012.

Maynard saw his progress at Cardiff interrupted by a series of injuries with a serious knee problem forcing him to miss most of his debut season.

The striker enjoyed a successful spell out on loan at Wigan under Uwe Rosler last season, scoring four goals in 11 starts, while this season for Cardiff he made only 10 appearances, scoring one goal.

Maynard is now back to full fitness and is ready to kick-start his career at a new club with several sides chasing his signature.

The likes of Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Wolves are all weighing up moves for Maynard feeling he would be a valuable addition to their plans for next season.

Nottingham Forest and Blackburn are also keeping tabs on Maynard, but due to their transfer embargos they could struggle to match the offers from their Championship rivals.

Scottish champions Celtic are monitoring Maynard’s situation as they look to bolster their attacking options for next season with the striker unlikely to be short of offers this summer
