Celtic were linked with Nice talent Deji Sotona just a year ago but the winger has now had his loan spell at Kilmarnock ended early.

The transfer window is getting info full swing and Celtic have been involved in plenty of rumours already.

Yuki Kobayashi, Alistair Johnston and Tomoki Iwata have all arrived, with those rumours proving to be true.

Many more will emerge this month and plenty won’t end up joining Celtic.

That was the case for the last January window too and one name linked to Celtic has ended up leaving Scottish football this week.

Back in December of last year, The Telegraph reported that Celtic were rivalling Tottenham for winger Deji Sotona.

It was suggested that Nice wide man Sotona was seeking a return to the UK having previously been on the books at Manchester United.

A move to Chelsea fell through and whilst the Blues were allegedly still keen, Celtic and Tottenham were right there in the race.

Nice ended up loaning Sotona to Brentford before striking a deal for him to join Kilmarnock for the 2022-23 season.

Not even five months later, Kilmarnock have now confirmed that Sotona is leaving the club to return to Nice.

So what on earth happened to a player Celtic allegedly had their eye on just a year ago?

The 20-year-old made just two league appearances for Kilmarnock, totalling a paltry 32 minutes.

Derek McInnes just seemingly didn’t fancy Sotona or feel that he was ready for Scottish Premiership action.

Sotona did bag one goal and two assists in two Challenge Cup games but just never really made that jump to the first team.

Sotona now heads back to France with his future unclear, but you have to imagine that Celtic have moved on after seeing him fail to break through at Killie.

Sotona has plenty of talent, it’s just now about finding that right club and right role, so we hope to see him blazing past full backs in the future, wherever it may be.
