Doubts remain over Rangers defender Bruno Alves’ future at Ibrox.
Celtic legend John Hartson has laid into Rangers defender Bruno Alves when speaking to the Daily Record, after a difficult first season in Scottish football for the experienced Portuguese man.
Alves, 36, joined Rangers last summer as one of Pedro Caixinha’s marquee signings, but only managed to make 25 league and cup appearances for the Gers throughout the whole campaign.
Perhaps unfairly, the Euro 2016 winner was ostracised by Graeme Murty during the second half of the season, with Murty preferring the likes of David Bates, Russell Martin and Ross McCrorie.
Hartson ruined Alves, who is currently in Russia at this summer’s World Cup as one of Portugal’s more experienced members, stating that his father could have played better during the heavy losses to Celtic.
“Bruno Alves? Cor, what a player he is. At 36 he looks like an old man limping onto the pitch. My dad could have played there and done better,” Hartson said.
“He’s got great experience, yeah, but don’t sign a guy knocking on 37 to deal with Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths. What chance you got?”
Alves faced Celtic three times last season, playing in the 0-0 draw, 3-2 loss and then the 4-0 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat that was quickly followed by a 5-0 league battering.
The former FC Porto and Cagliari defender has a year remaining on his contract, but following the signings of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, it remains to be seen if he has a future in Glasgow.
