Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are set to end the season without a trophy while Celtic near another Scottish treble.
There are two ways to look at Steven Gerrard’s debut season in management.
On one hand, his Rangers side are a far more well-drilled and dangerous side than the weak-willed motley crew thrown together by Mark Warburton or (shudder) Pedro Caixinha. The likes of Alfredo Morelos, Allan McGregor, Ryan Kent and Scott Arfield have been huge successes under the former Liverpool captain while they also triumphed over Old Firm rivals Celtic for the first time in three years back in December.
A 1-0 success at Ibrox was sealed by Ryan Jack’s goal and even the most ardent Celtic supporter could hardly have complained if Rangers had won by three or four.
On the other hand, however, The Gers are set to limp over the finish line this season in a distant second place with Celtic cruising to an eighth successive Scottish Premiership title. They also lost against Aberdeen in both cup competitions while falling at the knockout stage in the Europa League.
And given Timothy Mjallby’s connections to Celtic, he is the son of club hero Johan after all, it is no surprise which side he is on.
Mjallby spent time at Celtic at the age of 17 before returning to Sweden IK Sirius and announced his retirement three months ago after a persistent knee problem.
But while his playing career has come to an end, his love of all things green and white remains as strong as ever.
