Celtic legend Frank McAvennie reckons Old Firm rivals Rangers could hire Premier League-winning manager Pep Guardiola, but still have no chance of closing the gap between the two sides.

It means that current boss Graeme Murty is unlikely to remain in the Ibrox hotseat beyond the end of the season, after he watched his Rangers side lose 4-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final to Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Former Premier League and Scotland international Don Hutchison believes Gerrard would be a good appointment, but Celtic hero McAvennie replied on Twitter stating that not even Manchester City boss Guardiola could make the difference.

Guardiola is currently considered one of the best managers in the world and continued to build his reputation by holding aloft the Premier league trophy with five games still to play. The Independent reports he earns £21million a year, or £400,000 a week.

Murty, 43, took control of the club until the end of the season following the sacking of previous outspoken manager Pedro Caixinha, who is currently struggling in control of Mexican giants Cruz Azul.

It remains to be seen if the Rangers board are indeed set to appoint former England captain Gerrard, but it will certainly take a huge rebuilding job to finally see the Gers fighting on a level playing field with their Old Firm rivals.

The two enemies meet at Celtic Park this weekend, in a match that could see Celtic crowned as Scottish champions if they pick up three points against Rangers.
