Celtic may have missed out on signing Steven Caulker with the centre-back signing for Dundee today, but that could be a smart move from Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic were heavily linked with a move for Caulker, following his release from Queens Park Rangers, in the Scottish Sun.

However, the Bhoys have resisted the urge to offer Caulker a contract right now, with Dundee managing to get a deal over the line earlier today.

Celtic fans have expressed some disappointment at missing out on Caulker, but Rodgers has made the right move.

By letting Dundee sign Caulker, Rodgers can now see just how the centre-back copes in Scottish football before potentially making a move.

Caulker has a vast amount of talent, as shown by his time in the Premier League, but he needs to get his career back on track and the move to Dundee is make or break for him.

If Caulker had gone to Celtic straight away, Rodgers would have been taking a major gamble.

But by tracking his progress from afar, Rodgers can now assess whether Caulker is back to his best again.

Celtic absolutely dominate the Scottish market, and if Caulker does impress at Dundee, then Rodgers will surely feel confident of nailing down a deal for the defender in the future, by which time the deal would look far less of a risk.
